Kids with Cancer Camps

Fire Fighters Burn Foundation

Our membership supports the official charity of the International Association of Fire Fighters.  Annual fund raisers such as the Fire Fighters Car Wash, fun runs and boot drives maintain our dedication to this organization. Mike Nicholson a Fire Fighter with local 2461 is the western regional chairperson of M.D.A.C.

Strathcona Fire Fighters host an annual fun day at the Fire Hall for kids with cancer.  These kids tour the station, play games, ride the aerial truck and eat a meal with the Fire Fighters.  Our members enjoy the time to spend with these wonderful kids showing them the career we love.

This foundation donates/ funds a very important Burn Treatment Centre at the University of Alberta Hospital.

This  foundation is close to all Fire Fighters hearts.  Our membership takes part in fund raisers with our Capital Region Brother and Sister, Edmonton, St. Albert and Spruce Grove.

Firefighters and RCMP to run for good cause

by Rob Cramer
Wednesday November 01, 2006

Firefighter and EMT-A Todd Wilson is a triathlete, and he can finish the firefighter combat challenge in one minute and 51 seconds.
The combat challenge is a grueling firefighter training exercise that measures the physical fitness of a firefighter. Wilson, who is with Strathcona Emergency Services, is confident that these two things will help him finish the 10 km run he will be completing at Rundle Park on Sunday. Wilson will be one of 10 firefighters participating in the Catch the Elves charity run in support of Muscular Dystrophy Canada.
However, Wilson will be the only member of the Strathcona Emergency Services to complete the entire 10 km around the park in full combat gear. The other members will be completing the run in relay fashion.
“The other guys are giving me a hard time about running the entire 10 km. They think I’m kind of crazy,” says Wilson.
Many members of the Strathcona RCMP will also be participating in the run. Const. Kevin McGonigal will be running to support the charity. His son, who is two-years-old, suffers from muscular dystrophy.

According to his wife, Angela, McGonigal will be running because of what the association is giving them.
“My husband is running because Muscular Dystrophy Canada is going to help us with the costs of purchasing a wheel chair for our son Owen,” she says.
Owen has been learning to operate a standing wheelchair. This special wheelchair is one of the first in Canada and has many benefits.
“If Owen can be standing while he is using his wheelchair it will help offset the chance he will suffer from scoliosis in the future,” says Angela.
The Catch the Elves Run for Muscular Dystrophy Canada will be at 10 a.m. on Sunday. You can register for the event by visiting www.runningroom.com or visiting the Sherwood Park Running Room. Donations can be made, and pledge sheets can be obtained at Fire Station 1 on Sherwood Drive. Only exact cash and cheques are accepted for donations.
“We chose Rundle Park because it could accommodate wheelchairs and some participants will be in wheelchairs,” says Lieutenant Paramedic for Strathcona Emergency Services, Michael Nicholson. “The run will go to support a worthy cause.”
Rundle Park Family Centre is where the run will begin it is located at 2909-113 Ave. in Edmonton. A pancake breakfast will follow the event.

 Fire Gear to Nicaragua

Fire Fighter Berger

I just sent 22 boxes, approx 1000lbs, of fire gear and duty uniforms to  Fire Fighters in Nicaragua.  I would like to thank all our members and management for donating gear.   This effort will make a big difference in their safety.  Although Managua (the capital) has 22 fire fighters, the department spans the country and I plan to send more gear in the future.
